Shetland fleece is a very soft but durable wool which is a delight to spin. It has a staple of 2 to 6 inches. Fiber micron diameter ranges in the 20's.
|
Raw fleece locks.
|
All of our Shetland fleeces are well skirted and have very little vegetable matter and second cuts.
RAW fleeces average around 3 lbs = $12/lb + shipping.
WASHED fleeces average 1.5 to 2 lbs = $17/lb + shipping.

I send my washed fleeces to a cottage mill to be picked and carded into roving.
Roving = $2.00/oz + shipping.

Shetland roving.
|
I tend to spin the Shetland fibers somewhat worsted which when double-plied is a nicely draped DK or worsted weight size yarn, approximately 175 yds in a 3 oz skein.
Two plied yarn = $4.50/oz + shipping.

Handspun skeins of Shetland wool.

The lighter colors, white, cream, mioget, and musket, will dye brightly while the gray colors take on a more muted coloration with dyes. Shetland fiber takes colors well, however, a Fair Isle sweater knitted with the wide variety of natural colors can be quite stunning! I have also made felted items with Shetland wool and have combined Shetland with mohair and dog hair.
Color availability varies through the seasons.
